The Goddess Chang'e's Fly to the Moon (Chang'e in short) is a classical play which was originated by the master Mei Lanfang, but it has already been lost. The appearances and figures of the characters are very special. The maestro's son Mei Baojiu recalled, 'The Chang'e was created by my father in 1915. This is one of his representative works and the first classical dance drama in the history of Peking Opera.
Mei continues, "It has been my long-cherished wish to renew this classical Peking Opera which possesses the artistic characteristics of Mei Lanfang and cultural value. I hope Chang'e can play an invaluable role in the inheritance of the art of Mei Lanfang and the development of the art of Peking Opera." He indicates that he has officially empowered Xiao Di, who is the third generation of descendants of the art of 'Mei School' and also his only disciple in Liaoning, to undertake the important job of inheritance and innovation of the Chang'e. Mei Baojiu will be the artistic director of the play.
