Public Square Dancing in China

Public Square Dancing in China

2014-08-29

Irate residents in Wenzhou declared victory after successfully routing packs of public dancers by blasting a warning message over and over again through a $41,900 speaker system.

Public square dancing - a form of exercise that boasts roughly 100 million enthusiasts in China, most of them middle-aged and retired women - has become a flashpoint in the country's drive to urbanize.

These happy-footed seniors tend to take their dancing to parks, public squares, parking lots and other areas where sound levels from their portable sound systems often carry over into the homes of nearby residents.

Do you want to join in public square dancing or are you annoyed by the sound of portable sound systems?
