2014-03-26

Madieer (马迭尔) is unlike the Coldstone’s, Baskin-Robbins and DQs that are found all around Beijing. Madieer is one of China’s many time-honored brands originating from Harbin in China’s northeast Heilongjiang Province. A long-established ice cream parlor, it’s one of Harbin’s most treasured and popular shops on Zhongyang Street. This ice cream parlor, founded in 1906, still utilizes the same production methods it introduced when it first opened. In the past year, Madieer has introduced severaloutletsin Beijing so you can have a taste of Harbin.

Madieer currently has six outlets around Beijing, found in high-traffic tourist areas likeQianmenandWangfujing. These two were the first to be introduced in Beijing, with additional stores opened on Ghost Street, Nanluoguxiang, near the Bird’s Nest and outside the East Fifth Ring Road.

The most popular menu item is the original popsicle that sells for 5 RMB, a small markup from the 3 RMB ice pops sold in Harbin. The ingredients are simple, fresh and rich, yet it doesn’t taste too rich. Other more deluxe-flavored popsicles like creamy vanilla, mango, Swiss coffee and toffee caramel are sold for 10 RMB. In addition, Madieer also sells scoops of ice cream for 15 RMB. The menu is simple and so are the interiors of its stores, where visitors are invited in for a quick treat.
