Yue Opera Dream of the Red Mansions, adapted from the Chinese classical literature of the same name by Cao Xueqin, mirrors the vicissitudes of a feudal royal family through the tragic love between the protagonists Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. Its sumptuous stage radiates infinite charm. Hailed as a milestone for the stage version of Dream of the Red Mansions in 1950s, the opera reached a new height in script, performance, direction, music and choreography. It's a classic to be remembered.
Synopsis
The delicate and lonely Lin Daiyu feels a kinship with her cousin Jia Baoyu when she seeks shelter at her maternal grandmother family.
Atthe Grand View Garden, the like-minded Baoyu and Daiyu circumvent the fetters of royal family and read The Romance of West Chamber furtively, voicing their aspiration for freedom and igniting love sparkles.

Baoyu's father Jia Zheng wants his son to have a bright official career, but Baoyu despises position and wealth, and opposes feudal ethical codes, because of which Daiyu sees him as a bosom friend. Impatient of his rebellious behavior, Jia Zheng gives Baoyu a severe thrashing. Hearing his recovery, Daiyu goes to visit him but let the unhappy Qing Wen slam the door in her face. A misunderstanding is brewing.
Setting sights on the falling flowers, Daiyu recalls her heartbreaking experiences. She buries the fallen flowers and chants a poem. Overhearing the poem, Baoyu expresses his love for Daiyu…
