The Lei Feng Hat

The Lei Feng Hat

2013-12-17

Lei Feng was a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army of China, and following his death, became a cultural icon, portrayed as a model citizen for his selflessness, modesty, and devotion to Chairman Mao. Today, even after all the disputes about how his likeness was used as propaganda and his image as a role model serviceman has survived decades of political change, one thing about him is lasting: his fluffy warm hat.

This hat is charming, fun, and is instantly recognized as the Lei Feng Hat. If you see an image of Lei Feng anywhere, you can count on seeing his likeness sporting the hat. The hat is very retro-looking, lined with fluffy faux fur and outfitted with two detachable flaps that can cover the ears. Today, you can find many copies of the original, a black or dark-green hat with a single red star on it selling for around 20 RMB, or fashionable original design pieces for upwards of 50 RMB.

You can purchase one of these hats around town, but you will have to look around winter time when the demand is there. Likewise, shop around on sites like Taobao where you will have hundreds of options. They’re fun, warm, and, if you can pull it off, fashionable.
