On January 18 and 19, the National Ballet of China will present the classic balletThe Red Detachment of Womenat the Opera House of the NCPA.

As the first and most successful full-length Chinese ballet,The Red Detachment of Womenwas premiered by the National Ballet of China on September 26, 1964. The dancers even lived for months in military camps to learn swordplay in order to portray the soldiers vividly on stage.

Since its birth, the ballet has been highly acclaimed for its moving and tragic plot, magnificent stage design, and graceful choreography. Its music, undoubtedly, also contributes significantly to the ballet's success and popularity.

It is said thatThe Red Detachment of Womenwas a prelude to the exertions of Chinese ballet artists trying to establish a Chinese identity using an essentially foreign art form. The piece has been hailed as a model of the successful combination of Western ballet technique with Chinese folk dancing.

Synopsis

Wu Qionghua, daughter of a poor peasant, has been chained to a post in the dungeon of the Tyrant Nanbatian of the South, a landlord despot. Qionghua manages to escape. She is soon recaptured. Hong Changqing, the Commissar, and Xiao Pang, the Messenger, who are on a reconnaissance mission in disguise, pass by. They save Qionghua and point the revolutionary road for her. In the camp of the Red Army beside the Wanquan River, Qionghua angrily tells her companions of the Nanbatian's heinous crimes…
