The Niu Jie Mosque is located in Beijing’s Xicheng District, and more specifically, the Niu Jie area that is the spiritual center for over 10,000 Muslims. This mosque is the oldest in Beijing and is a hybrid of Islamic Calligraphy and Chinese design. The history of this place and its importance of the Muslim community makes this a worthwhile destination for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Niu Jie Mosque was first built in 996 during the Liao Dynasty and was reconstructed and enlarged under the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. The Mosque covers an area of over 10,000 square meters and reflects a mixture of Islamic and Han Chinese cultural and architectural influences. This can be seen from the outside, as the architecture displays traditional Chinese influence while the interior features a blend of Islamic Calligraphy and Chinese design. The Mosque points toward Mecca, the holy land of Islam, to the west. The main Prayer Hall has an area of 600 square meters and can accommodate a few thousand worshippers. However, it is limited only to Muslims.

The entrance fee of the Niu Jie Mosque is 10 RMB and is open 8:00 to 16:00. Visitors must wear appropriate attire (shorts or skirts are not permitted). Some areas inside are off limits to the public. Travelers looking for a unique and alternative cultural attraction should consider a visit to the Niu Jie Mosque.
