Kentucky Fried Chicken has become a familiar brand name to the Chinese, being a dominant fast food chain since entering the Chinese market in 1987. Today, you can find many items on its menus catering to local Chinese tastes. This started with flavored chicken wings, egg tarts, breakfast porridges, and eventually rice dishes. It has in the past few years opened a chain called East Dawning, or Dong Fang Ji Bai (东方既白), withoutletsaround China offering Chinese fast food with similar fast food operations. We’ll introduce more about East Dawning below.
East Dawning is owned and operated by Yum! Brands, parent owner of KFC and Pizza Hut. It strives to use the KFC business model while serving Chinese cuisine. Its menu items focus on quick-to-prepare Chinese food, such as porridge, noodles, dumplings, steamed buns, in addition to staples like beef and chicken served over rice. Unlike KFC, East Dawning eschews soft drinks like Pepsi in favor of more traditional teas, juices, and soy milk. The company was founded in 2004 and is headquartered in Shanghai. It has 30 East Dawning Restaurants in China: locations are in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Suzhou.
Beijing has just two East Dawning locations. One is located nearWangfujingatOriental Plazawhile the other is located in the Beijing South Railway Station. Prices can range from 15-25 RMB per person, but you customers will enjoy the same style of service and consistency they can expect to get at KFC. Right now, there are limited-time menu items available like hot pot and large chicken quarters served alongside rice and vegetables.
