Silk Street is a popular shopping market among foreigners in Beijing.
The market started in 1980, and now the street accommodates over 1,000 retailers. With its growing popularity, it is now regarded as one of the symbols of Beijing together with the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, and Pecking roast duck. Many foreign visitors, including some celebrities, enjoySilk Streetfor shopping or having their clothes tailor-made. The former president of the U.S., George Bush, once went there with his daughter to buy some silk robes, and the wife of Jacques Rogge (8th President of the International Olympic Committee) also went there to buy traditional Chinese dough figurines.
The current Silk Street was rebuilt into a shopping mall and opened in 2005. It enlarged its scale of business, adding traditional Chinese handicrafts, antiques, calligraphy, carpets, paintings, hand-knit dresses, toys, trinkets and fine jewelry.
