Caishikou: The Execution Grounds during the Qing Dynasty

2013-04-18

If have ever taken subway line 4 in Beijing, you may be familiar with the Caishikou Station. But do you know what place it is in both modern and ancient China.

Caishikou Station is a subway station on Line 4 of the Beijing Subway in China. It opened in September 2009, together with the other stations on the line. It is located in the Caishikou neighborhood of the Xicheng District.

During the Liao Dynasty, it was the capital's largest vegetable market over a thousand years ago. During the Qing Dynasty, as many know, Caishikou used to be an execution ground. So naturally Caishikou in some ways carries an unlucky and whammy reputation and many local residents were reluctant to mention it.

Part of it was known as Caishikou Execution Grounds (菜市口法场) where most of Beijing's capital punishments were carried out during the Qing Dynasty and were open to public viewing.
