West Gate

The West Gate of Peking University used to be the main gate of Yanjing University before Peking University and Yanjing University merged in 1952. On both sides of the gate are two stone lions. The gate was built with donations from alumni of Yanjing University, so is also called the “alumni gate”. Yanjing University has many illustrious alumni, including outstanding Chinese physicist Huang Kun, famous historical geographer Hou Renzhi and well-known physician Wu Jieping. The Learned Tower

The Learned Tower is an architectural masterpiece combining function, art, and environmental consideration. Located among the shadows around Weiming Lake, it holds a special place in the hearts of Peking University students. The Learned Tower is located on a small hill to the southeast of Weiming Lake. It imitates a similar tower in Tongzhou District and is built in the style of Liao Dynasty Miyan brick pagodas. The fact that it was originally the campus water tower, combined with its distinctive style, makes it an inspired work.

Weiming Lake

Weiming Lake has special significance for Peking University, almost as much as the Han and Tang Dynasties have for China. Apart from its beauty, it’s an iconic symbol of the culture of the university. Weiming Lake is the spirit of Peking University, and characterizes the university in many people’s minds.

The Library

The Peking University Library displays a harmonious combination of classical Chinese and modern styles. It’s classic exterior and modern interior blend comfortably. The library currently has a collection of nearly 6 million volumes, a scale only outdone by the National Library. It is the second largest library in China, and the number one university library in Asia.

The Triangle

Peking University’s famous Triangle is located next to the large lecture hall on May Fourth Avenue. The Triangle’s most distinguishing feature is its overwhelming number of posters of all types, concerning everything from academics and study groups to advertisements. The Triangle is also where student organizations publicize their activities and set up exhibits, and these student club activities are a major feature of Peking University.

The Tranquil Garden and Lawn

The Tranquil Garden is currently the largest lawn in the Yan Garden. On warm, breezy spring and fall days it’s a great place to relax. At the same time it’s an important activity area for Peking University students and teachers. The Peking University centennial celebration variety show was held here, too.
