Started by online music network Wooozy.cn, Wooozy Community Films is a new initiative that screens music documentaries simultaneously in Beijing and Shanghai every two months. The aim is to show groundbreaking films that are hard to find on the Mainland and to develop a sense of community among music fans. Following the first installment in November of Do It Yourself: “The Story of Rough Trade”, the series returns in January with “Upside Down: The Story of Creation Records”.
Directed by Danny O’Connor, Upside Down chronicles one of the most successful and influential independent record labels of the ’80s and ’90s before its demise in 1999. Creation Records was founded in 1983 by Alan McGee, Slaughter Joe aka Joe Foster and Dick Green.
Signings included some of the era’s most important British names in independent rock: Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, The Boo Radleys and Swervedriver.
From the signing of Oasis to the label’s dissolution, the 2010 film is an especially timely watch, as McGee recently announced plans to found a new record company.Wooozy’s screening will include a post-film discussion and Q&A with local industry leaders.
