Peking Opera: The Legend of the White Snake

Peking Opera: The Legend of the White Snake

2013-01-05

The Legend of the White Snake is hailed as one of the most famous and popular plays on the traditional operas stage, and one of the best-known Chinese legends. The story tells the love between human and monster, indicating that people boasting different class status, race and religion, and identity have the right to own love and stick faithfully to each other through thick and thin.

Shi Yihong is a versatile A-list Peking Opera actress. The Legend of the White Snake fully showcases her talents in Peking Opera. The performance is based on the version written by Tian Han, ranging from the White Snake and Green Snake going to the lake, to Green Snake destroying the tower, till White Snake and Xu having a reunion.

In 1980, Shanghai Film Studio made a film of the same name starring Li Bingshu, in which a lot of special effects and imaging lens were used; the film caused a great sensation. Shi Yihong staged performance based on the version in Shanghai, presenting the audience with a soulful and heart-warming Bai Suzhen.

Compared with old version of the play, Tian Han's version delivers the rationality and logic base of Bai's emotion change. Meanwhile, the simplicity and clarity of the character of Green Snake and Fahai further intensifies the tragedy conflict and overall dramaticism.

Bai Suzhen comes to the mortal world to pay a debt of gratitude, but after she savors the worldly pleasure, she cannot part with the love, so she falls in love with Xu Xian. The obsession of Bai Suzhen and the weakness of Xu Xian form sharp contrast, showing a positive female independent thought and making irony and criticism of male chauvinism. This is why The Legend of the White Snake has a long lasting market till now.
