The Rickshaw Bar

The Rickshaw Bar

2012-11-27

The Rickshaw has a devoted clientele that followed it from its origins as a dive on Sanlitun back street to its spacious home at Nali Patio. Its orange faux-adobe façade is the perfect entree to Beijing's best Tex Mex place.

There are outdoor tables on the ground floor terrace shaded by various types of foliage as well as an ample upstairs balcony that is graced with a pool table. The Saddle Cantina is renowned by beer lovers in Beijing for its special ice tap that pours beer at -2 degrees Celsius. Its frozen margaritas are all served with a double shot and come in raspberry, strawberry, Piña Colada, and original lime flavors.

The Saddle Cantina also brews its own pineapple and chili tequila for those of you who like an extra punch with your shots. Soak up the alcohol with tasty Huevos Rancheros, no matter what time it is, or have guacamole made at your table and served with crispy tortilla chips.

It is a very popular bar among expats and one of the few places in Beijing where a crowd is always guaranteed. A two-storey saloon, the Rickshaw has a simple but effective interior. Downstairs is quieter and boasts booths and small outdoor area, replete with beer pong table.

Upstairs is rowdier and plays host to the bar, a number of tables, a couple of televisions showing sports, a small balcony and a pool table that always has games in progress. Beer is cheap – starting at ¥15 for draught Tsing Tao, while spirits and cocktails average around ¥35. The Rickshaw has a reputation for its burritos (¥30) and also serves all-day American style breakfasts (¥40). The Rickshaw provides respite for the homesick and is one of Beijing’s better bar offerings.

Besides the chicken wings with blue cheese dressing and Mexican food, the Rickshaw also offers a decent selection of imported beers such as Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, Redback, Pure Blonde, Acme Pale Ale, Rogue Amber, Cascade, Red Seal Ale and Dead Guy Ale. Located near The Bookworm, close to where the old “Nan Jie” bar street used to be, this bar has tendencies to get jam packed at weekends. Open 24 hours, this is the place to get an import beer no matter what time of the day or night.
