How to Watch Western Sports in China

2012-10-10

Moving to China can make it hard to follow your favorite sports team. You can stay up way late to catch big games or jump on box scores the next morning, but it’s not quite the same. Our suggestion? Try one of these four options. Even if you end up awake at 4am hanging on for overtime to finish, you can do so from the comfort of your bed.

Satellite

This is the easiest way to go if you’re technologically impaired. Companies like Shtvguide.com can get you set up with a variety of satellite packages, all available after a quick setup process. Options start from RMB1,600, and almost all include staples like ESPN and Star Sports; the most expensive even sometimes include the Golf Channel and NBA TV. Some of these satellite streaming services run off your internet feed, so make sure you’ve got enough bandwidth to run this without lag. The biggest bummer about satellite? You have no control over what teams (or even sports) will be on when you want to watch.

Stream It

Sport Lemon is our go-to site when we’re really stuck. The variety of sports it streams live is really impressive—you can watch just about anything, from tennis, soccer and basketball to handball and ping pong. Though the streams are nowhere near HD-quality, it’s good enough, especially since the site doesn’t require a very fast connection. The downside? You’ll have to click carefully to avoid all the pop-up ads floating around the page.

Download It

If you want to download HD-quality games, check out The Sports Torrent Network (it’s blocked in the U.S., so turn your VPN off). This is the most technically complicated option, as it comes with a couple of nerd-tastic rules (seed ratio, anyone?) and requires you to download using a program called BitTorrent (it sounds scarier than it actually is) but the quality of the games is impeccable and the selection covers most mainstream sports. The main downside, of course, is that you won’t be able to watch games live.

Go Through Official Channels

This is obviously our preferred option. Most major sports leagues now offer some type of online streaming service: the NFL has Game Pass, MLB has MLB.TV and so on. A season’s subscription can be as cheap as US$20 (e.g. MLB.TV), and it usually comes with perks like bonus content and the ability to stream old matches or the league’s official TV channel. Many even allow you to watch on your phone or tablet. Either way, be sure to check whether or not your league of choice offers this service in China (the NBA, for example, doesn't).
