Tripping in with fabric combos galore, and sporting more tassels than a Bangkok strip joint, there’s bound to be a Charles Philip slipper out there for you. If they’re good enough for Rihanna to stroll around the island of Capri, then they’re probably good enough for the likes of us to pound the scruffy streets of Beijing.

Charles Philip Shanghai has carved out quite a significant international reputation since its humble inception. Hailing from Milan, co-founder Philip had always been inspired by the Prince Albert slipper worn by the English gentry, so he commissioned a Chinese cobbler on Shanghai’s Mao Ming Road to create a unique pair. Eschewing the usual stuffy velvet monogrammed look, he chose a fabric in super-soft blue-and-white striped shirting cotton. The resulting slipper flew off the shelves all the way to Bloomingdale’s and now the comfortable rubber-soled, leather- lined classic slip-ons can be bought in Milan’s Corso Como, London’s Browns, Paris’s Colette and now Beijing’s Wuhao. Each pair is constructed from fabrics not usually associated with shoes: tweed, linen, denim, paisley, silk, cotton. They come in spots, stripes, multi-patterned, in fact every shade of the colour wheel, and pricing starts from around 990RMB.

We love the leg-lengthening pastel shades, which are currently very on trend. At the suggestion of his mother, Philip designed a collection in feral cat prints that became an instant bestseller. Practical, comfortable and with a myriad of variations, Charles Philip really is Shanghai’s godfather of sole.
