Chadao Ancient City is located in the northwest of the Badaling Great Wall, it was a pass of the outer Great Wall in ancient time, it was also the only access to northwest from Beijing Badaling. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chadao as an important military fortress, with the Inn, garrison department, soldiers drilled day and night. Due to the special geographical location, there are many stores and businessmen inside and outside of Chadao ancient city, every year ten thousands of delivery camels from Zhangjiakou to Beijing pass through here.
Chadao Ancient City was built against mountain, shaped like an irregular boat. Experts, based on the wall structure and selected materials, concluded that the city had been built three times. The first time was earth walls, began in the Han Dynasty, and later added a layer of stone wall to earth wall, the last time in Ming dynasty Jiajing years, added bricks around stone wall, currently the residual bricks are engraved with "official". From wartime to Cultural Revolution, Chadao ancient city was destroyed beyond recognition, and many historic sites were destroyed, leaving only half south city wall and broken east and west city gate.
In 2001, hadao ancient city was listed as heritage restoration project in Beijing. After several years’ repair, Ming City walls, East and West City gates, city tower were restored; City God Temple, Jade Emperor Temple, ancient inn and other 20 historic sites were rebuilt. All existing houses in the city were changed to Ming & Qing style, and the main street run all the way from east to west was resumed to Ming and Qing Antique Street, with antique inn, restaurant, shop, courtyard, etc on both sides.
