Located just east of central Wangfujing Street, the Catholic East Church, or Wangfujing Catholic Church, is one of the best-preserved religious sites in the center of Beijing. Rebuilt in 1904, the Church rests upon the remains of an old decrepit building that was demolished to make way for new projects. Prior to the constructorion of the new church, the former building was the Church of Saint Joseph's Church and was built in the 12th year of the Qing Dynasty during the tenor of Emperor Shunzhi.
It was the second Catholic church built in Beijing after the Italian voyager and preacher Matteo Ricci built the “South Church” in southern Beijing at the end of the Ming Dynasty. In the 1980s, large-scale repairs and maintenance were carried out by the government for East Church. Occupying an area of 2,387 sq. meters, the church underwent its latest renovation in May of this year. The fascade has given the building somewhat of a new appearance as various lighting facilities illuminate the interior designs.
