The Shenglian Mountain Scenic Area, some90 kmfrom downtownBeijing, is a geological park in Fangshan District. It is a tourist and sightseeing attraction with both historical and cultural heritages and natural landscapes. Covering an area of48 km² and rising 1,030 meters above sea level, it was honored as one ofBeijing's top eight Ming Dynasty scenic attractions. The mountain is part of theTaihangRange, and it is shaped like a huge lotus blossom, hence the name "Shenglian," which in Chinese means sacred lotus. The area features several limestone caves and some unique geological landscapes such asShenniuPeakandCuipingMountain. Atop the hill, there are several attractions, including a well-known Daoist temple, thePantaoPalace, and a Buddhist temple. Springwater from the naturally formed karst (eroded limestone) cave, theShengshuiCave, gushes water all year round. Halfway up the cliff stands the four-meter-high Shengmu Statue, which is still well-preserved after some 100 years since its creation. The scenic area is also home to various sorts of wildlife, among which are many rare species under national-level protection. Exotic yurts and star-rated hotels, as well as other modern service facilities, are set up in the resort. With its favorable climate and great accommodations, Shenglian Mountian is attracting more and more people every year.
