Travelers are reminded to take with them an adequate supply of disposable food and drinks, toiletries, general medical supplies as well as proper clothing and accessories for riding.
Do not drink from the tap in Bashang, bring an ample supply of bottled water.
There is a significant temperature difference between day and night on the grasslands in addition to constantly changing weather conditions. Bring warm enough clothing for nighttime, sunscreen for the daytime, and rain gear in case it rains.
Take note of the food quality when eating out. A moderate amount of baijiu can offset problems that may arise from sampling local cuisines.
Make sure to bring flashlights. It can be incredibly difficult to see much of anything during those beautifully starry nights out on the grasslands. Fengning county hospital: (0314) 801-2301
Traveling by car:
Calculate how much gas you'll need in advance. The distance between Beijing and the Bashang Grasslands is nearly 600 kilometers, and your last chance to refuel is at a Sinopec gas station in Tanghekou.
All roads past Yougushentan are rough mountain trails. Drivers are advised to proceed with caution.
Be wary of animals herds and horseback riders but don't drive directly on the grasslands to avoid them. Tips for grasslands horse riding:
Don't wear shoes with skid-resistant soles. Riders are also advised to not wear wire-rimmed glasses, which will break easily if you fall.
Tight long pants made of a soft material are recommended. Riders should bring their own protective equipment like gloves and leg protectors.
Leave your valuables behind when you go horseback riding, and make sure they are left in a safe place.
Never stand directly behind a horse, unless you want to get kicked.
When going downhill, don't let your horse go faster than a trot.
Check your saddle's straps after riding for some time to make sure they're still fastened tightly.
In the name of safety, riders on the Bashang Grasslands (especially new riders) should have at least one leading horse guide out in front at all times.
Travelers are advised to ride in groups and not individually to avoid getting lost. Everyone should pay as a group when everyone makes it safely back to camp.
