Beijing’s Miyun Reservoir Sees Record Storage

2016-09-21

The water stored at Miyun Reservoir, Beijing's largest, hit a 16-year record of 1.5 billion cubic meters on Tuesday, according to Beijing Water Authority.

The amount is 613 million cubic meters more than this time last year, largely thanks to water from central China's Hubei Province in the south-to-north water diversion project.

The reservoir has 160 million cubic meters of "southern water," with nearly a million cubic meters flowing into the reservoir every day. An increase in upstream water has also contributed.

Built in 1960, Miyun Reservoir in northern Beijing has a capacity of 4.4 billion cubic meters. However, due to lack of rain, it has been operating at less than a quarter of its capacity in recent years.
