At the northernmost end of Beijing's central axis is the Bell and Drum Tower, where the standard 'Beijing Time' was once issued on a daily basis.

The Bell Tower is not only the only surviving large monolithic building in China with an all-brick and stone structure without beams and arches, but on the first floor hangs a 63-ton bronze chiming bell cast during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, which is known as the "King of Ancient Bells" and is an important object for studying the history of ancient metallurgy and the technology of casting large bronze objects.
