How to utilize the Big Air after Beijing Winter Olympics?

2022-02-23

On February 20, all the events of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games were completed. The Shougang Big Air in Shijingshan District, Beijing, will be the first ski jumping venue in the world to be permanently preserved and used as an Olympic legacy. In the future, what will the Shougang Big Air look like? Will it be open to tourists? Let's have a look!

No "sense of incongruity" in the industrial heritage

In order to serve as a new building permanently preserved on the site of Shougang Industrial Park, firstly, it must be recognized by Shougang people. And secondly, it must be recognized by everyone that it is not "out of place" in the industrial heritage.

In order to ensure a smooth and beautiful skyline, the relative height between the Shougang Grand Jump and the abandoned cooling tower of Shougang has been precisely calculated, and the landing area has sunk several meters as a result. In addition to the height, the angle is also considered. The design team used virtual reality (VR) technology to adjust the placement angle of the "crystal heels" of the Shougang Big Air according to the physiological data of the testers' pupils and dermal reactions when they saw the virtual scene.

The "flying ribbons" are both functional and beautiful

The "flying ribbons" on both sides of the Shougang Big Air are both functional and aesthetic. At one time, it was suggested that the position of the athletes jumping should also be installed with a permanent windbreak. But we made it a temporary one that could be turned up. Because we are responsible for the people in the city, making it beautiful and leaving the public with a pleasant and healthy memory.

The future is about sustainability

The design, construction and operation teams are all looking more towards the future. Unlike comprehensive venues such as the Bird's Nest for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, how is the highly specialized Shougang Big Air going to be fully utilized and sustainable?

From its attributes, first of all, it is still to host international professional competitions of ski jumping category, such as World Cup, World Championships and undertake some professional athletes' training. The Winter Olympic Games have closed, and there is no event scheduled for the Shougang Big Air in the Winter Paralympic Games. The withdrawal work is expected to last until March. In the future, in addition to getting closer to the 60-meter tall Big Air, the public will be able to enjoy the city scenery, the former site of the factory and the cultural and sports facilities around it.

The Shougang Big Air is not a single entity, but is integrated with the industrial culture sites of the entire Shougang Park and the landscape of Shijingshan District. As a landmark attraction of the Winter Olympics, the Big Air is the only snow venue in the Beijing competition area, and will be open to global visitors in the future.
