Fangshan District, located at the junction of North China Plain and Taihang Mountains, is the southwest gateway of Beijing. With a total area of 2019 km², it has 8 streets, 14 towns and 6 townships under its jurisdiction, with a permanent population of about 1.3 million.
Fangshan District has a long history and is known as the "source of people", "source of the city" and "source of the capital". The 3063-year-old Liulihe site is regarded by historians as the starting point of Beijing's ancient urban development. The world-famous Zhoukoudian Peking Man site and Shanding Cave Man are the birthplaces of human civilization.
In addition to the Zhoukoudian site, Fangshan also has famous attractions such as Shidu Scenic Spot, Shihua Cave and Yunju Temple. Shidu Scenic Area is located in the southwest of Fangshan District, Beijing, which has the only large-scale karst landscape in northern China. The Juma River in Shidu is very famous for rafting. Shihua Cave is located deep in the west mountains of Fangshan District, only 40 kilometers from downtown Beijing. It is the first geopark in China with natural landscape of karst caves as its theme. Yunju temple was selected as one of the "World's Best of Beijing Tourism" as the temple with the largest number of stone sutra plates in the world in 1992.
In the future, Fangshan will be built into an ecologically beautiful, green development, functional and well-governed ecological livable demonstration area.
