Located at the southern foot of Yanshan Mountain, Huairou District is one of the suburban districts in northeastern Beijing. It covers a total area of 2,122.8 km² and has a permanent population of about 450,000 people. Huairou has a long history, with the name "Huairou" already existing in the Tang Dynasty more than 1300 years ago, from the Book of Songs.

There are many mountains in Huairou, with 89% of the total mountainous area in the region, and 24 of them are above 1000 meters in elevation. The famous mountain in northern Beijing, Heituo Mountain, is 1,533.9 m above sea level. And the South Monkey Peak is 1,705 m above sea level, which is the highest mountain in the region. These rolling hills are the capital's Great Green Wall and natural barrier. Not only are there vast mountains in Huairou District, but there are also many rivers and springs. There are 17 rivers belonging to the two water systems of Chaobai River and North Canal.

Huairou District is rich in tourism resources and has many famous attractions, such as Mutianyu Great Wall, Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall, Shengquan Mountain, Yanqi Lake, Hongluo Temple, Qinglong Gorge and so on. Mutianyu Great Wall is a 5A scenic spot, which is connected to Gubeikou in the east and Juyongguan in the west, and has been a military stronghold to defend the capital since ancient times. It is one of the best sections of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty, with profound historical value and high cultural value. Huanghua Water Great Wall Tourist Area is a national 4A-level scenic spot, named after its three sections of the Great Wall built into the water. This is the only Great Wall in Beijing where the wall is connected to the water.

Yanqi Lake is located at the foot of Yanshan Mountain by the Great Wall, where flocks of geese often come to roost in the spring and autumn every year, hence its name. In 2014, the APEC informal meeting of APEC leaders was held here. And in May 2017, the "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum was held here, making Yanqi Lake once again the focus of the world's attention. Hongluo Temple is a tourist attraction that integrates humanistic and natural landscapes. It is the birthplace of Buddhism in northern China and the most important ancient temple in northern Beijing.
