Introduction
New Dong'an Market is located in Wangfujing Street, Dongcheng District. Its predecessor, Dong'an Market, was named for its close distance to Dong'an Gate, which was once the most prosperous business district in the inner city. There are shops selling daily necessities, ancient books, antique shops, snack stalls, acrobatic fields, restaurants, and theatres.
Story
After 1949, Dong'an Market Management Office was established, which basically maintained the original industry, network pattern, and traditional business characteristics. Since 1954, public-private joint management has been established successively. In 1966, Dong'an Market was renamed Dongfeng Market. In 1967, it was renovated and expanded. After completion in 1969, it reopened and became a large shopping mall. The name of Dong'an Market was restored in 1988. In September of the same year, Beijing Dong'an Group was established, and Dong'an Market became an economic entity subordinate to Dong'an Group. In 1993, Beijing Dong'an Group Co., Ltd. and Hong Kong Sun Hung Kai Properties Co., Ltd. jointly carried out the reconstruction and expansion project at the former site of Dong'an Market. It is one of the top ten buildings in Beijing in the 1990s. In January 1998, New Dong'an opened for business. It integrates department stores, retail stores, cinemas, catering and entertainment, and office buildings, with a total area of 213000 square meters. It has 107 elevators, and it sells products of nearly 50000 varieties. The archaistic market on the ground floor of the shopping mall and the scene map of Dong'an Market in the early Republic of China at the main gate condense the history of Dong'an and reflect the cultural characteristics of the century-old store. New Dong'an Cinema (see cinema) is the first multi-hall cinema with Sino foreign joint venture in Beijing.
