Traveling in Beijing's Temple of Heaven in Early Spring

2020-06-25

Temple of Heaven was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would worship the god of heaven and pray for rain and good harvest. And it is China’s largest ancient architectural complex for rituals to pay homage to heaven in existence. Being round in the north and square in the south embodies the concept of “round heaven and square earth”.

The whole temple complex is surrounded by inner wall and outer wall. And inside the inner wall stand the household names like the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and Echo Wall. The Heaven Worshiping Hall at the West Annex Hall of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests offers a glimpse into how China’s rituals to pay homage to heaven have evolved and showcases in abundance rituals of ceremonies for worshiping the heaven in the Qing Dynasty, such as all kinds of ritual vessels and procedures.
