
Garments of emperors were symbolism of paramount power and imperial authority. Dress code in the palace represented political hierarchies. Royal families paid much importance on the dress code that was believed of fundamental importance to the stability of the country.


For the emperor, his most remarkable attire was the Dragon robe which was only donned for grand ceremonies or festive occasions as the ceremonial robe. Dragon was the dominant motif of the robe (the symbol of imperial authority), along with red boats (the symbol of happiness) and the cloud-filled firmament against with coil and twist. Besides, the color of the robe strictly indicated rank and lineage, divided into “the upper five colors” and “the lower five colors”, and among which bright yellow is exclusively reserved for imperial use.
