Shichahai - A Water Area in Downtown Beijing

Shichahai Scenic Spot is a historical and cultural tourist scenic spot in Beijing, located in Xicheng District in downtown Beijing and near to Beijing central axis. Covering the water area of around 33.6㎡,it is the only open scenic spot with open water in Beijing. It is also a historical block with the largest area and the most completely preserved in Beijing. Shichahai Tourist Area has beautiful scenery and is known as "the water town in the North."

The scenic spot is composed of Qianhai, Houhai, Xihai, and scenic spots and historical sites along the banks. It can be traced back to the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century. Shichahai is of great significance to the planning and construction of the old city of Beijing. Since the Yuan Dynasty, it has been responsible for tasks of urban water source, water transportation, and port. Besides its natural scenery, ancient buildings around this area play important roles in China’s cultural and historical development, such as Prince Gong’s Mansion, the Former Residence of Song Qing Ling, Guang Hua Temple, Yandaixiejie and so on. Today, visiting Shichahai by pedicabs has become a popular activity that attracts plenty of visitors from home and abroad.

The night life of Shichahai also deserves exploration. The famous Shichahai Bar Street, also known as Houhai Bar Street, is a popular spot for people, especially young people, to hang out at night.
