Gui Street and Ghost Street

2020-04-01

Gui Street is now synonymous with gourmet food. But today, we do not talk about food. Let's talk about Gui Street.

Although Gui(簋) has the same pronunciation with Ghost(鬼), it has nothing to do with the ghost. It's an ancient food utensil. If you don't believe it, go to see the sculpture at Dongzhimen, it's definitely a bronze utensil.

Today, it has become a food street with historical origins. There is a saying: there used to be many people selling vegetables and fruits here in Dongzhimen, like today's wholesale market. They opened in the middle of the night and left at dawn. The merchants lit the kerosene lamps and looked like ghosts from afar. So there is a saying of "Ghost Street".

Is there a ghost? It's a legend anyway. Actually, Gui Street has a history. This street is full of restaurants now, but the lanes behind it carry a lot of history and culture. In particular, there are many lanes on the south side of Gui Street. It's much quieter than the street. It is suggested that when you go to Gui Street for dinner, you might as well take a walk in the lanes near the street to experience different cultures and customs.
