Yanqing District for Beijing 2022

2018-11-14

Yanqing District is located northwest of Beijing, 74 km from the city proper, with a total area of 1993.75 km2 and a permanent population of 316,000. As an ecological conservation & development area in the capital, it is cold in winter and cool in summer, thus being known as a summer escape resort of Beijing. Currently, by virtue of abundant ice and snow resources, it is striving to build itself a “city of ice and snow”. Apart from a place with profound cultural deposits and time-honored history, Yanqing is also a tourist attraction in the suburbs of Beijing, featuring more than 30 unique scenic spots such as Badaling Great Wall, Longqing Gorge, and Yudu Mountain and a diversity of leisure activities like the Ice Lantern Festival.

As one of the three major competition zones of 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition and 2022 Winter Olympics, Yanqing is ushering in a major historical opportunity for development. From here, a beautiful Yanqing is showing her unique charm to the world, a global city is gaining momentum, and a world-class ecological civilization demonstration zone is embarking on a new journey!

Yanqing District is a well-known tourist destination in Beijing with rich tourism resources, including famous scenic spots like the Badaling Great Wall, Longqing Gorge, Songshan Mountain, Guyaju Ancient Cave Dwellings, Yudu Mountain, Baili Landscape Gallery, and Lotus Mountain, and characteristic folk villages such as Liugou Village, Changshouling Village, and Xiushuiwan Village, attracting hordes of tourists.

It is fair to say that Yanqing is a lotus land with blue sky, green water, singing birds and fragrant flowers. Here, visitors can enjoy carefree time in the idyllic retreat secluded in mountains and water. At an altitude of 500m, Yanqing District has an annual average temperature about 4℃ lower than that of Beijing. In summer, it is even cooler than Chengde Mountain Resort, becoming a summer escape resort of Beijing. There is no off-season to travel and enjoy leisure events in Yanqing. Spring is a perfect season here for outing and enjoying the ten-thousand-mu apricot blossom; in summer, it provides an ideal site to beat the hot weather, take a low-carbon ride, and indulge in mountains and rivers; in autumn, there is arguably never a more wonderful time to see Yanqing, where you can climb mountains, view red leaves, and pick grapes and apples to experience the joy of harvest; in winter days, you can feel your passion here with ice lanterns, skiing, hot springs, and hot pots.

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics plans to utilize 25 venues in three competition zones in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. In Yanqing Zone, there are a total of five competition and non-competition venues, where three sports (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, and luge), and 20 events out of four disciplines (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge) will be hosted. Definitely, the construction of the zone will drive the construction of transportation and municipal infrastructure in surrounding areas, bringing great opportunities for the whole development of Yanqing. As for venues constructing, the environment will be taken into account as much as possible to reduce work quantity and save investment. After the completion, Olympic Village in Yanqing Zone can accommodate 1,430 athletes and team officials.
