On August 10th, 2017, Charming Beijing Tourism Promotional Day was launched in Helsinki, Finland. The event was held at Tallberginakatu wharf, known as Helsinki 798 (famous art area in Beijing), and Cruise “Finlandia Princess”, famous place for fashion and leisure of the city. The Beijing Tourism delegation generalized city brand image of Charming Beijing and introduced Beijing tourism resources and products towards Finnish public, which attracted and involved in many people from local tourism and media industries as well as public. Guo Xiaoguang, Cultural Counselor from Chinese Embassy in Helsinki, Song Yu, Director-General of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, and Outi Pekkinen, Marketing Director, City of Helsinki Executive Office attended and addressed on the promotional event.
Song Yu, Director-General of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development said, the number of European tourists visiting Beijing is 1,059,000 in 2016 and 479,000 in the first half of 2017. The number of inbound Nordic tourists to Beijing continuously increases in recent years and Nordic countries have been important potential tourist source countries for Beijing. The bilateral ties between China and Finland have been developing stably since their establishment more than 60 years ago. It has achieved remarkable results in cooperation in the fields of politics, economics, technology, culture, tourism, etc. Finland continuously responds positively to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Especially on April 2017, the state visit to Finland by Chinese President Xi Jinping built up a new type of partnership featuring mutual benefits between China and Finland. This will contribute to broad cooperation including tourism sector and push forward friendly relations between both countries. Amity between people holds the key to sound relations between states. Beijing and Helsinki have established sister city relationship as early as 2006.
The Beijing Tourism Promotion Day in Finland, an important event of tourism exchange between the sister cities, is an important embodiment of close relationship, deeper understanding and friendship driven by tourism between two peoples and will facilitate development of Finnish and even Nordic tourists market for Beijing.
This tourism promotional day is intended for local public to promote Beijing tourism resources and special products in all aspects. During the event, the delegation handed out brochures, promotional materials and souvenirs to local public, and attracted local people’s active participation by trying on the king’s and queen’s costumes of the Qing Dynasty and taking photos, tasting local Beijing snacks, drawing Peking Opera masks and other interactive experiences. It further demonstrated charm of Beijing as an Eastern ancient capital and will create a trend of experiencing Beijing culture and tourism. Additionally, the delegation met with officials of Helsinki Airport and Finnair, and also held talks with Helsinki Marketing, the tourism authority of the city. They hope to further improve transportation accessibility between Beijing and Finland and strengthen communication and cooperation of culture and tourism.

About sister cities relationship between Beijing and Helsinki
Beijing and Helsinki officially establish sister cities relationship on 14th July, 2006. In the meantime, Happy Spring Festival Fair has been consecutively held in Helsinki since 2006 and Chinese culture shown by this event left a deep impression in Finland.
Beijing and Helsinki have close communication and cooperation in recent years. On January 2016, Helsinki Airport, Finland signed Memorandum of Cooperation with Beijing Capital International Airport to further strengthen flight connection between China and Finland, especially Beijing and Helsinki to provide convenience for Finnish outbound tourists to Beijing. On January 2017, Changping district of Beijing held Development and Communication Trade Talks with Finnish counterparts in ice-snow industry. Moreover, Helsinki is also a city member of World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) of which Beijing is the Chairman City of the Council.
